Responsibilities

The Cytogenetic Shared Resource (CSR) has a mid-level career opportunity for a Research Laboratory Specialist with experience in the field of cytogenetics. The CSR is an institutional core facility that provides a large range of cytogenetic services to various investigators throughout the institution. This position will be responsible for

  • Processing and karyotyping of G-banded human and murine samples submitted to the facility
  • Operational knowledge of the Applied Spectral Imaging karyotype/FISH scanner and cytogenetic work capture station
  • Performing fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) experiments on specimens of either human or murine origin, including optimization of experimental conditions for specific probe sets
  • Assisting in the day-to-day operations of the research laboratory
     

 

Minimum Education

  • Bachelor's degree in appropriate scientific field is required.

Minimum Experience

  • A minimum of eight (8) years of relevant post-degree work experience, with at least five (5) years at the Sr. Research Tech level, is required with a Bachelor's degree
  • A minimum of seven (7) years of relevant post-degree work experience, with at least (5) years at the Sr. Research Tech level, is required with a Master's degree
  • A minimum of four (4) years of relevant work experience including post-doctoral and/or technical staff experience is required with a Ph.D

Preferred Experience:

  • Experience in karyotyping human G-band samples
  • Knowledge of murine G-band karyotyping is beneficial
  • Experience operating and maintaining the Applied Spectral Imaging karyotype/FISH scanner and karyotyping stations
  • Experience performing FISH
  • Knowledge of Lawson ordering system is beneficial
  • Ability to keep accurate, detailed records of work performed
  • Ease and skill in interacting with the many users of the CSR and participation in a team environment
  • American Society of Clinical Pathology certification in cytogenetics CG(ASCP)cm is preferred but not mandatory.
